Now is the time to promote a plastic bottled water free event to your School, College or University Associations and Committees. The Environment Agency's Green Procurement Guidelines as good practise for schools and education establishments recommend that green products can reduce environmental impact.
The main objective is to consider the life cycle of products as a whole, not just their purchase price. This includes thinking about the:
• The materials used in manufacture - Make sure to check the labels and bottom of plastic bottles for the SPI codes (read more on SPI codes here), which appear as recycling triangles with numbers and letter codes. These are used to help with recycling and to identify the safety aspect of the chemicals used to make the plastic, leaching into the beverage.
• Methods of production and embedded energy.
• Energy use of the product over its life span.
• Eventual disposal costs and environmental impacts -
- It takes 7 litres of water to make a single 1 litre plastic bottle.
- It takes162g of oil (petrolium feedstocks) just to manufacture a 1 litre plastic bottle. This creates over 100g of greenhouse gas emissions (10 balloons full of CO2) per empty bottle.
- 2.4m tonnes of plastic are used to bottle water each year and it represents serious oil use for what is essentially a single-use object.
• Potential for re-use or recycling – Reusable stainless steel BPA free water bottles can be reused again and again and are completely recyclable, reducing your environmental impact.
