About Plastic Bottles
The facts
• The UK consumes 3 billion litres of bottled water a year.
• 13 billion plastic water bottles sold in the UK last year.
• Only 3 billion were recycled.
• It takes 7 litres of water to make a single 1 litre plastic bottle.
• It takes162g of oil (petrolium feedstocks) just to manufacture a 1 litre plastic bottle.
• This creates over 100g of greenhouse gas emissions (10 balloons full of CO2) per empty bottle.
• 2.4m tonnes of plastic are used to bottle water each year and it represents serious oil use for what is essentially a single-use object.
• The US throw away 38 billion plastic bottles annually, the world's biggest consumer of bottled water, that's more than $1 billion worth of plastic. (Fast Company, December, 2007)
• This requires more than 17 million barrels of oil a year, enough to fuel more than a million cars for a year.
• The average American uses 166 plastic water bottles per year –if you put those end to end, they would circle the world 50 times.
• The US throw 30 million water bottles into landfill every day.
• It takes 700 years to decompose 1 plastic bottle in a landfill.
